KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7, 2010 (AFP) – Malaysian marine authorities said Thursday they were searching for six fishermen who went missing in the Malacca Strait after their boat collided with a cargo ship.
Eleven others were rescued from the sea shortly after the incident, which occurred early Thursday in the waters off central Selangor state. Of the 11, two needed hospital treatment.
"The search and rescue operation for the missing fishermen is in progress," a spokesman from the Marine Operations Force told the national news agency Bernama.
Marine police officials could not be immediately reached for comment by AFP.
At least 94,000 ships sail the narrow Malacca Strait each year, making it one of the busiest waterways in the world.
